Sand Metropolis
James Bau, Nationwide Geographic Your Shot

Resembling towers in an extraterrestrial metropolis, these otherworldly towers are tufas, shaped on the shore of Mono Lake, California. Your Shot photographer James Bau captured this picture of the tufas, which he says “could possibly be alien residences with parking garages,” throughout 1 / 4-mile stretch on the lake. Tufas type when calcium-wealthy springwater mixes with the carbonate-wealthy waters of the lake, creating these buildings that develop beneath the floor.
