Culture ministry allocates two-million euro for Pompeii

IMG title=”” alt=”” src=”” IMG class=hide alt=”Culture ministry allocates two-million euro for Pompeii” src=”” (ANSA) – Rome, March 4 – Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini on Tuesday allocated two million euro for maintenance at Pompeii near Naples after three collapses due to heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday fuelled fresh concern over the condition of the archaeological site. He also ordered immediate action to restore the damaged structures and shore up others at risk of collapse. Earlier, European commissioner for regional policy Johannes Hahn said that “every collapse is a huge defeat” and called on the Italian authorities to take care of the remains of the Roman commercial centre destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. PThe excavations are largely open to the elements and although experts argue that a measure of deterioration is ‘physiological’ it is agreed that more needs to be done to protect the UNESCO World Heritage site. The European Commission has allocated 105 million euro for restoration and conservation of the archaeological area under the Great Pompei project, which got underway last year./PIMG id=mediaViewer title=”” alt=”” src=””ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
